Crochet a Granny Square

Learn a variety of stitches while making a Granny Square. Choose between a small Granny Square that can be used as a washcloth or a big Granny square that can be used as a lap or baby blanket. For the wash cloth, the instructor recommends 3 colors of cotton yarn (example: Lion Brand Cotton, Bernat, Kitchen Cotton). For the blanket, just about any yarn (example: Lion Brand, Paton, Red Heart, baby yarn) that is soft to the touch will work. For either project, be sure the yarn has #4 for thickness on the label. Bring a crochet hook J10- 6mm, yarn, scissors, and enough yarn (single color or a variety of colors) to make a blanket. (Keep your receipt - you can return yarn if unused.)

Knitting a Hat

Learn how to cast on stitches, purl and knit, decrease and increase stitches, and bind off. You'll need at least one color yarn, but if you like to experiment, bring another complementary color to add some fun stripes to your pattern. Avoid dark colors for they hide the stitches and are difficult to see for a beginner knitter. Pick any yarn (no cotton) that has the thickness of #4 written on the label. Avoid yarns with bobbles, fringes etc. for the first project - go for the 4-ply yarn (Lion Brand, Paton). Bring yarn, long knitting needles, single pointed, size 7 US-4.5mm or size 8 US-5mm. For the slightly advanced knitter, we can visit a variety of stitches and go over patterns if you wish.

Temari - Beginning

Temari is an ancient Japanese craft that began in the 600’s. Noblewomen used silk thread stitched around a core of rice hulls to create a soft ball, or “mari” that they used for gentle indoor games and for decoration. With the rise of cotton production, the art of temari became attainable for many, and mothers stitched temari for their children. Temari has evolved into a popular craft in Japan and is often given to newly-married couples, on the birth of a baby and at holidays. Outside of Japan, temari is not so well-known, but it has a small, but enthusiastic, following throughout the world. Supply fee of $60 payable to the instructors at the first session.
