Physical Education

Barbells  

Use bars and plates to isolate and define major muscle groups, stabilize the core and train the cardiovascular system. Barbell workouts are a great complement to a variety of sports specific training programs, and a proven means of increasing physical health. All levels welcome.

Basic Yoga

Exercises include body postures, deep relaxation, breath control, cleansing processes, and mental concentration. Bring a towel or mat for exercising. Level I offers a slower progression of very gentle warm-ups and postures with shorter holding periods for the beginner who is mainly interested in relaxation techniques and muscle toning.

Hiking  

Experience longer, more challenging trails locally or in an extended area from the College. Hikes could include difficult to strenuous hills. We will be hiking for 5-7 miles at a moderate pace up to 3.5 hours, including a lunch break. This course also includes a day hike on the Appalachian Trail in Harper's Ferry for a total of 7-9 miles at a moderate pace up to 4.5 hours.

Introduction to Belly Dancing  

If you've ever wondered how dancers maneuver a prop AND dance, then this is your chance! Learn how to multi-task like a champ! It's 8 weeks of props! The first 4 weeks will be learning how to use a veil. The second 4 weeks will be learning how to use a cane/stick. Both are great workouts for your arms- and then some! You'll learn how to shimmy, shake, and undulate all while using a prop! Whether you're completely new to bellydance or have taken a few classes, there is plenty to learn! The veil can be any fabric as long as it is sheer and 3 yards long. The cane can be a wooden dowel from any hardware store. If you'd like to purchase a fancy version online- feel free!

Tai Chi  

Experience general level classes in the Wu Dong style of Tai Chi Chuan. Each class will start with a warm up designed to strengthen and stretch the body, followed by short exercises in Qi Gong. These exercises help to develop the deeper meditative side of Tai Chi. Footwork, balance, and coordination are developed by practicing the four basic stances of Chinese martial arts and the practice of walking Qi Gong. Will also do work with the form and push hands.

Zumba Gold  

Zumba Gold is a series of fitness programs specifically designed to take the exciting Latin and international dance rhythms to the active older adult. It is easy to follow so everyone any age can do it and includes Merengue, Salsa, Cha Cha, Cumbia, Belly Dance, Flamenco, Tango, and Rock and Roll. This program is guaranteed to provide you with a safe and effective total body workout! It's great for the mind, body, and soul. Same great music and moves, but a little slower pace and more time teaching the steps. Everyone in the county is welcome regardless of your fitness needs. As with all fitness classes, it is recommended that you seek a physician's advice before starting an exercise program.
