Basket: Herb Gathering Basket  

This is a cutie and is an original design by the instructor, Joan Betzold. It is a great beginning basket or for someone who has woven before and has lots of interesting aspects. It is approximately 15" x 8" by 10" and has an unusual woven bottom, decorative side fillers, and an inserted handle that will be covered in a fancy weave. Very sturdy and yet lovely in design. Baskets: Bandana Bread Basket  

This is a great beginners basket for someone who has never woven or hasn't for a long time. This basket will introduce basic weaving techniques of start-stop weaving, twinning, weaving a "hole," and rim work. Gourd Festival" Leather-Braided Rim on a Gourd Bowl  

This elegant rim treatment goes with many types of gourd art and gives it a completed look that does not compete with your art. Choose from brown or black leather. The provided cut, cleaned, and prepped gourd bowl is ready for you to create the rim. The instructor supplies a leather needle(s) and a written tutorial. Please bring a pair of needle-nose pliers.

Gourd Festival: Dogwood Pointillism  

Learn to transfer a furnished design onto a gourd and to use pointillism with a variable temperature wood burner to create the pattern of dogwood leaves and blooms onto the gourd. Discuss the concept of pointillism and practice with markers on paper prior to burning on the gourd. A discussion of wood burners and pen tips along with general pyrography techniques included. Students must bring a variable temperature wood burner with a very small ball or writing tip pen and a breathing mask or respirator if sensitive to the odor of gourd pyrography. Gourd Festival: Flower Relief Carving  

Use a thick cut and cleaned gourd to carve a 3D relief flower. You must have your own rotary tool (dremel). Carving bits will be available for use and/or sale, but please let instructor know ahead of time. If time permits, we will color the flower using acrylic paints. Gourd Festival: Gourdaments - Featuring Troy Tatum  

Create a faux “leather tooled’ Gourdament. Learn to sand the gourd outer shell for a very smooth finish, transfer a furnished design onto an egg gourd, and to use a variable temperature wood burner. Use a skew pen tip to outline the design, a ball or bent shader pen tip to add tonal values, and a small ball pen tip to stipple the background for contrast and effect. Finish the gourdament by applying a colorant, adding a hanger, and applying a protective finish. Students must bring a variable temperature wood burner with a skew tip pen, a ball or bent shading tip pen and a small ball pen tip and a breathing mask or respirator if sensitive to the odor of gourd pyrography.

Gourd Festival: Gradient Gourd Vase  

Create a tall gradient colored gourd vase and learn about combining Fieblins new oil dyes and Design Master sprays. There will be two choices of color gradients: black, brown, red and honey (as shown in photo) and black, royal blue, green and honey. Enhanced the gourd with a seagrass rim and natural pods. All supplies, including a clean gourd and base , and Marianne Barnes new book Creative Embellishments for Gourd Art is included in the price of this workshop. Bring a hair dyer or heat gun to complete your project.

Gourd Festival: Knotless Netting and Coiled Gourds  

Working on a small natural Ready-to-Weave™ gourd (cut, cleaned & sealed with beeswax), you will surround the gourd with a knotless netting stitch done with 4-ply Irish waxed linen (your choice, from 32 colors). Finish the rim with a row of coiling. Several materials, such as pine needles, leather lacing, braided seagrass, etc. will be provided to choose from. If you choose, beads will be added below the row of coiling and bead tails added to the “front” of the gourd. All materials and full color instructions will be provided with class. Gourd will be natural color. Your choice from 32 colors of 4 ply Irish waxed linen and various bead packs. Supplies students must bring: scissors that cuts thread, light and/or magnification, if needed, to see small beads.

Gourd Festival: Maple Leaf Filigree  

Combine a number of techniques as you transfer a design, carve the outline, remove the surface, and then drill a filigree pattern in the prepared surface. Then apply inks to the leaves and gourd surface. Cleaned gourds, dyes, patterns, and heat guns provided. Bring foredom, optima, dremel or similar tools w/flexible extension, 1/8 and 3/32 collets or adjustable chuck, dremel sanding drums, dust mask, burrs/ round, flat saw, filigree, inverted cone, and various sanding disk for your rotary tool. This class is scheduled for outside, or in case of bad weather another building.

Gourd Festival: Modern Hand Drum  

Make a hand drum using both traditional and modern materials. Learn deer antler handle attachment techniques, modern drum head and gluing, tuning your drum, creating your drum stick, as well as decorating and accessorizing your pieces. Bring a dust mask, apron, latex or nitrile gloves.

Gourd Festival: Party Lights!  

Fun is the best way to describe this class! Using a Chinese Bottle or Milk Bottle gourd, create a festive pendant light. Supplies include a gourd, cut, cleaned, drilled, and ready for designing, 500 beads in assorted colors, and a black lamp cord, 11 feet long for indoor use. Maximum wattage is 60 watts. Bring a drill and drill bits ranging from 5/32 to 1/2. It is important to have a 5/16 drill bit. This class is scheduled for outside, or in case of bad weather, in Joppa Hall, Rm. 15.

Gourd Festival: Put a Lid on It.  

Create a tight fitting lid for your gourd base using two different gourds, cork, and driftwood. Start with a clean milk bottle gourd and assorted gourd pieces. After cutting and fitting a lid, color the two pieces, attach cork for the base, and add decorative piece of driftwood for the handle. Bring a mini-saw, extra blades, and latex or nitrile gloves.

Create a color birdhouse and learn the basics of cavity and hole-size requirement for different species of cavity-nesting birds. Learn how to combine an odd-shaped gourd with your leftover bits and pieces to create three projects. First is a cute little bird using an egg gourd and gourd top, next is a pin or magnet from scrap pieces, and lastly is a flower using birdhouse holes and seeds. Gourd Festival: Christmas in April! Filigree Ornament Carving  

Use a bell-shaped ornamental gourd and filigree a pattern. Attach a bell inside, use leather dye to color, and add a metal ornament cap for hanging. Everyone receives six gourds and all supplies including bells and ornament caps. Gourds are cut, cleaned, and ready for filigree. Must have your own rotary tool (dremel). Pointed filigree bits will be available for use and/or sale. Email the instructor in advance if you need them. This class is scheduled outside, or in case of bad weather, another building.

Gourd Festival: Double-Layer Gemstone Chip Rim  

Make a double rim that is secured using gemstone chips. You will string the gemstones in a pattern to create a thick, double rim adding a new dimension to your gourd. Instructor provides a cleaned, dyed, and drilled gourd, a variety of gemstones, lacing materials, and tutorial.

Gourd Festival: Funky Chicken  

Create this barnyard buddy using a gourd, latex paint and Quickwood. 
Add some polka dots, feet, combs, wings or waddles to enhance your 
fowl friend. Your design is limited only by your imagination! Instructor supplies paint, Quickwood, brushes, sponges, latex gloves, 
and gourd (approximately 6” -8" tall). Students should bring an apron. 
You may bring miniature items such as kitchen utensils for a touch of whimsy!

Gourd Festival: Inverted Filigree Vase  

This is a great class with lots of techniques to learn. Start with a demonstration of how to invert a gourd using the top as the bottom. Then create a filigree pattern around the top of the gourd and cut an opening. Enhance the gourd vase with color to create a one of a kind art piece. Students must bring a dremel with carving bits (I recommend the Carbide Pointed gold burr, available from Arizona Gourds), rubber gloves and an apron. Other supplies are provided.

Gourd Festival: Philodendron Bowl Featuring Troy Tatum  

Learn a new method of creating a rounded philodendron rim on a gourd bowl. Learn to prepare a gourd for crafting, stain the outer shell, lay out and drill holes, add a vinyl tube to the rim, lace the philodendron sheaths onto the rim, and add a protective finish. Bring regular gourd tools and a breathing mask or respirator.

Gourd Festival: Random Weave Basket  

Learn to loosen up with random weave, a technique that allows for a structured or very freeform basket or sculpture. Your weaving stype and tastes will determine the shaping and style. Work with natural and various colors of round reed in several sizes. As a finishing accent, leather lacing, nubby yarn, and seagrass will be provided. Full color pattern included. Supplies needed: sharp, strong scissors; small awl (flat or round-tipped), small water container; and old towel.

Gourd Festival: Sideways Chipping  

Improve your “chip” (U-gouge) carving skills by creating a pattern on a pre-cut and drilled vertical canteen gourd. Carve a recess area to insert a colored glass stone as a focal point to replace the stem after chipping a pattern and coloring with leather dye. Class includes a flared edge glass vase insert and a canteen gourd ready for carving. Students must bring: U shaped chip carving gouge - #9 preferable. Gourd Festival: Under the Sea  

Create a beautiful fish gourd bowl. Learn to etch into a gourd creating different line widths using the rotary tool, transfer patterns, and to crouch sea grass for a rim. Instructor supplies a dyed gourd ready for etching, patterns, gloves, sea grass rope and crouching supplies. Students may or may not complete this project but will be able to complete on their own. Bring dust mask, foredom, optima, dremel or similar rotary tool with flexible shaft extension, adjustable chuck, or 1/8 and 3/32 collets along with inverted cone bit, cone bit, ball bit and if possible dental bits. Gourd Festival: Western Flair Faux Leather Tooled Gourd Featuring Troy Tatum  

Learning how to create the look of tooled leather on a gourd is only the beginning of this adventure into wood burning. You will transfer the design, utilize a compass to create circles, woodburn the outline, create multiple values of shading, stipple the background, and learn how to create a shaded basket weave. Add colorant, embellishments and a protective finish. You will also be given instructions for the braded leather rim. Due to time constraints and complexity of project, some students may not finish in class. However, all techniques will be covered so you can finish after class. Bring a variable temperature wood burner with a skew tip pen, a ball or bent shading tip pen and a small ball pen tip and a breathing mask or respirator if sensitive to the odor of gourd pyrography.

Mosaic Cascading Planter  

Create a very unique cascading planter to hang outside using mosaic techniques. The planter is approximately 10 inches by 23 inches. There will be multiple ceramic cups cut in half and assorted tiles broken into small pieces attached with silicone to the front side of the board. The entire board will then be grouted and the edges painted. Small plants can be planted into the cups. Supply fee of $40.00 payable to the instructor at the first session.
