Garden Mosaics  

Mosaic is the art of creating images with an assemblage of small pieces of colored glass, stone or other materials. Small pieces of stone or glass of different colors known as tesserae are used to create a pattern or picture. Assemble a form, cut glass, set the glass in a form, and pour concrete into the form. The stone can be used a a stepping stone for the garden. Supply fee of $40 payable to the instructor.

GF Carved Giraffe in Trees  

In class you will measure the gourd for placement, sketch giraffes, tree limbs, and grasses. Lightly carve (outline) around the giraffes and trees, then remove the background skin to make the giraffes pop. This is not a deep carving project. Bring a rotary carver, drill bits, mask, and apron.

GF: Acorn Basket  

Use some of those gourd scraps in this cute, fun class. The “acorns” are cleaned, sanded, and leveled so you can focus on the “caps." The caps are started around a gourd stem and use glycerinated pine needles that are extremely flexible. Learn how to shape your cap to fit the acorn and then learn several different stitching techniques to create the acorn basket. Bring good, sharp scissors, fine-tipped wire cutters and needle nose pliers.

GF: Ancient Antiquity  

Learn how to create a wonderful aged patina on a gourd that you carve in class with repetitive patterns. Learn to add and subtract finishes to create a one of a kind “ancient” vessel. Emphasis is on depth of carving, detailing, measuring and creating a great finish. Bring a dust mask, rotary carving tool that accepts a universal chuck or has the ability to accept 3/32 or 3/64 collets, small ball bits, small straight bits or dental bits. GF: Basic Rim With Beads  

Learn to coil pine needles onto a prepared gourd to create a simple finishing rim treatment. You will also learn how to add beads to your coiling and to evenly space them for a gentle wavy effect. This is a great class if you are new to pine needle coiling or want to learn how to add beads to your work. Students should bring good, sharp scissors, fine-tipped wire cutters and needle nose plyers. Instructor provides a prepared gourds (cleaned, sanded, holes drilled), ¼ pound glycerinated pine needles, waxed linen, stitching needle and porcelain beads.

GF: Cattails and Dragonflies  

For those who want to try pyrography or hone some of your pyro skills! We will cover basic lines, basic solid burns, and some beginner shading on this wonderful dragonfly with cattails. More advanced students will be able to perfect their shading techniques and have fun with the design. Bring a wood burning tool, either single temperature or variable temperature burner, and a mask.

GF: Custom Gourd Jewelry  

Create two custom pieces of gourd jewelry. The first is a necklace featuring a delicate, miniature, gourd. The second is a fabulous necklace made from handsomely finished flat gourd pieces that uses alcohol inks for brilliant color. Three separate alcohol ink techniques are taught. You’ll also learn to make your own necklace from jewelry findings and silk cord and to accessorize your finished pieces with beads, bead caps and other jewelry findings. Bring and apron or crafting clothes - ink is permanent on fabric.

This project gives you a lovely vase with colors that “pop” and compliments any style of decorating. You’ll learn to make fine lines with ease and to arrange pleasing patterns of simple lines to invoke a recognizable scene. Add wooden rings with QuikWood to give your vase a nice finished rim. GF: Fill it With Shells  

Learn to coil pine needles onto a prepared gourd while working on shaping techniques. Concentrate on completely filling in the opening of the gourd while working sliced sea shells in between the coils. We will be using a 5-6 inch gourd for this project. GF: Garland and Gourdaments  

Accent your wool feather tree with a variety of garlands and gourdaments. Participants have the opportunity to create miniature garlands and gourdaments perfect for use on the wool feather tree for different seasons of the year. Options include pumpkins, ghosts, birdhouses, owls, and mini swirled ornaments. Garlands incorporate gourd seeds, rustic metal shapes, a variety of colored wooden beads and miniature colored gourds. There will be time to make one 30-inch garland strand and 6 ornaments. Bring aburning tool with a line or ball tip, your favorite inks or dyes for coloring gourds, drill and drill bits to drill small holes in seeds and small gourds, and heat gun for setting inks that need to be heat set.

GF: Gourd Display Basket  

Learn several basic basketry techniques as you weave this large, attractive round basket on a solid oak base that is perfect for a display of small gourds, fruit or condiments, etc. as the centerpiece of your table. You have the option of weaving on a 12” oak lazy-susan base the day of class for $3 extra. Some color choices will be available and full color instructions are included.

GF: Hammered Metal Rim Bowl  

This is an introduction to using aluminum foil tape and micaceous iron oxide to create a hammered metal rim. You dye the gourd, place the tape around the top, paint with micaceous iron oxide, color with memories ink, and then buff with Inca metal rubs. Bring a heat gun and apron.

GF: Hobbit House  

Make your very own Hobbit house on a 12” clay saucer. A cannonball gourd will be provided for the house, a round wooden disk for the door and a variety of materials to custom-build and embellish your hobbit house. Planting with succulents or miniature plants can be done after you take it home…or not. Students should bring a mini gourd saw (if they have one) and a dust mask. Optional: a woodburner for adding designs to the gourd.

GF: Image X Three  

Have fun creating a multimedia art piece, by stamp printing an image, taking that same image and carving it, and then carving it again in softer, lighter tones (shadow effect) to create your image x three. Drill and glue in your own staves for the weaving. Weaving around the top completes the unique look to this gourd.A variety of stamps (images) will be available. Bring a rotary carver that uses 3/64 and 3/32 bits, dust mask, gloves, baby wipes, and apron. Bit sizes needed for this project are small round bits, diamond bits that have small round heads. Dental bits work great, just be sure that you have universal chuck or collets that fit. Diamond bits that are really worn out work great too for the shadow effect.

GF: Leaves w/Textured Backgrd  

Learn how to dye your gourd with alcohol-based Trans Tint® wood dyes creating great color depth, and then carve a wonderful textural border all around. Emphasis is on using line to create movement and textures that create different planes of space. Learn how to measure for a border and space your design so that it flows naturally. Colors can vary from green/blues to brown/golds and reds. Bring a dust mask, rotary carving tool that accepts a universal chuck or has the ability to accept 3/32 or 3/64 collets, small ball bits, small straight bits or dental bits if you have them, and an apron.

GF: Oriental Gingko Leaves  

Make an oriental inspired vessel with a lid that is skewered with a bamboo piece and gingko carved leaf atop. Learn how to relief carve in the intaglio style. A round reed border will also be attached using a coiling method. All gourds will be cut, cleaned, drilled and dyed. Dental bits, instructions, and patterns provided. Bring an apron, two or three clothes pins, a bucket for water, dust mask, rotary tool that has universal chuck or collets that are 3/32 and /or 3/64 for bits. You will need small ball bits or straight bits, do not bring diamond bits. Instructor has 5 extra rotary carvers that can be reserved by notifying her in advance.

GF: Relief Carving W/Shapes  

Use fun shapes in a creative pattern of your choosing to learn how to carve a relief design and three-dimensional shapes. Students must have a rotary tool, proper collets and chucks, and a minimum of a tiny ball tip or engraving tip along with a medium ball tip. Preferable bits are Dremel #105, #106, #107, #116 & #462. Create five hooty owls that are each unique and charming. Emphasis on texture and line will be taught using the intaglio relief method of carving on a dark brown gourd that has been twice dyed to help achieve the texture and color effects. Each one will be different and full of personality. GF: Wool Feather Tree  

The earliest feather trees in America (around 1880) were brought by German immigrants and were made from dyed green or natural goose feathers. This class uses wool strips instead of feathers to make a unique 18-inch table top tree that you can adorn with gourd ornaments or other ornaments of you choice. Bring sharp scissors.

Gourd Festival: Hoot the Owl  

Don't miss this hoot of a class! Get step-by-step directions to design an owl on a pre-cleaned apple gourd. After drawing the owl, use different size bits to create light patterns. A light base, cord, and bulb are included. The instructor will have a sample of a wood burned drilled owl for those interested in enjanding their light on their own after class.

Gourd Festival: Random Weave Basket  

As featured in the book: Weaving Gourds by Marianne Barnes. Learn to loosen up with random weave, a technique that allows for a structured or very freeform basket or sculpture. Your weaving stype and tastes will determine the shaping and style. Work with natural and various colors of round reed in several sizes. As a finishing accent, leather lacing, nubby yarn, and seagrass will be provided. Full color pattern included. Bring sharp, strong scissors; small awl (flat or round-tipped); small water container; and old towel.

Gourd Group  

This creative evening allows those interested in gourd crafts to share ideas and tips to get the most from their gourds. It is open to anyone who has previously taken a gourd class. Gourds: Come Chip Away!  

Learn (or enhance) your chip carving skills! We will use "U" shaped hand gouge tools to chip patterns onto a birdhouse that the bird will flock to! Gourds: Heishi Inlaid  

Bring a rotary tool and ball tip burr with appropriate collet and learn to carve channels for inlaying Heishi Beads. Using a cut and cleaned gourd and Adirondack inks for color, carve a channel to inlay Heishi Beads (small natural strung beads). A simple rim of craft cord can be added. Gourds: Mini Jigsaw Cutouts  

Sign-up for this session that will improve your skills with your mini jigsaw. Projects include a grass bowl, stencil cutout swag light, and a gingko vase. If you have a current project that you are working on with your jigsaw, that is fine too. The goal is to become more proficient with its use. You must supply your own jigsaw.
