Art and Its Response to Crisis  

Explore various pieces of art that was made in response to major, modern events of the 20th and 21st centuries. Focus is primarily on events such as WWI to current conflicts like Afghanistan and how these tragedies influenced artists' work during times of crisis. Art Since the 1960s  

Examine important developments in American and European art and criticism from the 1960s until the present. Topics include Minimalism, Pop, Conceptual Art, activism, Post-Modernism and Contemporary art. Class focuses on each artistic movement, the artistic methods and principles used by each group, the historical reference associated with each movement, and looks at the artist’s intention and purpose of the artwork created. Ceramic Raku Workshop  

Learn to do Raku, the ancient Japanese style of firing pottery. Work in the HCC ceramics studio and pieces may be hand built and/or wheel thrown. Participate in the firing process and leave with your finished work at the end of the firing day. The first Saturday is spent creating work, Friday evening is the glaze night, and the second Saturday is the firing day. Class times: first session 12-5 p.m.; second session Friday, 5:30-9:30 p.m.; last session Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. No experience necessary.

Ceramics: Wheel-Throwing Workshop  

Work at the potter's wheel in the HCC ceramics studio. Learn the fundamentals of throwing, centering, opening, and pulling the clay by observing demonstrations given by the instructor and putting the demos into practice. Various forms created will then be bisque-fired for the students to glaze. Student should bring a bucket, sponge, and towel. Pottery tools may be purchased at the College Store.

Fundamentals of Drawing  

Appropriate for the beginner or as a refresher for the out-of-practice artist, this class explores the many techniques used to see correctly. A series of simple exercises will assist in achieving accurate proportions, shapes, textures, and values within a composition, culminating in an individual project of the student's choice.

Landscape Painting  

Focus on painting skills and techniques necessary to create beautiful landscape artworks. Create a body of work that represents your own personal artistic style and choose your preferred painting medium (acrylic, oil, watercolor). Students will have the opportunity to choose locations on campus where they would like to paint and may choose their desired subject matter based on landscape painting concepts (nature, architecture, etc.). Drawing is the basics of art. Every good painting starts with a concept drawing. Learn to control the mediums of graphite, charcoal and pastel pencils and sticks to create fully develop drawings. Study line, shape, form, layout, perspective, and the use of light and shadow to create depth.
