Open your mind to the world of abstract painting! Focus on how color and form can be used to create new environments and new imagery to create a unique body of work. Various approaches of painting techniques will be used as a vehicle for pure expression and guide each artist to find their own creative voice. Learn how color, form, line and space can play a significant role in expressive art and open different possibilities within the world of painting. Art Since the 1960s  

Examine important developments in American and European art and criticism from the 1960s until the present. Topics include Minimalism, Pop, Conceptual Art, activism, Post-Modernism and Contemporary art. Class focuses on each artistic movement, the artistic methods and principles used by each group, the historical reference associated with each movement, and looks at the artist’s intention and purpose of the artwork created. Black and White Art  

Explore the world of black and white art with various techniques using different pens and inks. Projects will range between creating a still life using an India ink wash and a paint brush to generating a still life with a ball point pen. Various gray markers will be utilized too. Ceramic Raku Workshop  

Learn Raku, the ancient Japanese style of firing pottery. This method can be used on either hand-built or wheel-thrown pieces. Participate in the firing process and leave with your finished work at the end of the firing day. The first Saturday is spent creating work, Friday evening is the glaze night, and the second Saturday is the firing day. Class times: first session 12-5 p.m.; second session Friday, 5:30-9:30 p.m.; last session Saturday 9 a.m. - 6 p.m. No experience necessary.

Ceramics: Wheel-Throwing Workshop  

Work at the potter's wheel in the HCC ceramics studio and learn the fundamentals of throwing clay. After creating various forms, learn to bisque-fire, and then how to glaze the finished product. Bring a bucket, sponge, and towel. Pottery tools may be purchased at the College Store.

Classic Cartooning  

Learn basic cartooning techniques and apply these methods to the study of the cartoon face, hands, and body. Learn different styles of cartooning, from classic animation style to political cartooning; simplistic, sketchy styles to detailed caricature. Finishing techniques for both pen and ink and brush rendering are also covered. Rosemaling  

Rosemaling is Norwegian for "decorative painting" and is a form of decorative folk art that originated in the rural valleys of Norway. Explore this style of decorative painting on wood that uses stylized flower ornamentation, scrollwork, lining, and geometric elements, often in flowing patterns. Supply fee of $50 payable to the instructor at the first session. Includes woodenware, patterns, and brushes.

Zendala is a hybrid of the Mandala Circle and Zentangle Art and is designed to give you the benefits of both art forms. You don't need to know how to draw - just keep an open mind and be willing to take that first step on a fun, relaxing and mindful journey.
