Gain skills for piloting safely within coastal and inland waterways. Topics will include how to select and read charts; use of charting tools; planning voyages; plotting using both dead reckoning and lines of position; and how to compute time, speed, and distance. Examine different types of wooden boat construction from traditional to composite. There are 8 to 10 boats under construction at any one time and students are involved in all aspects from lofting to construction and finishing.
Learn boating skills necessary to meet the certification requirements of the Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police and earn your certification card. Topics to be covered include types of vessels, navigational aids, marine weather, regulations, emergency actions, personal watercraft, and maneuvering. This course meets the Maryland Boating Safety Education Act requirement needed for persons born after July 1, 1972 to operate a registered pleasure vessel on Maryland waters.
